Amethyst J. Davis

Founder,

Harvey World Herald

Amethyst J. Davis is the founder of the Harvey World Herald, a Black-owned digital newsroom in Harvey, Illinois. A firm believer that knowledge is to be shared, not owned, she worked in administration at New York University before pivoting to journalism. At 24 years old, she made the decision to quit her job in New York City and returned to her hometown of Harvey, which had not had a local paper since the mid-1990s. Amethyst built the Harvey World News to be a trusted news source and a platform for the Harvey community. She has become a leader in her community and mentor to her peers, especially youth.

Amethyst was previously a Documenter at City Bureau and a Casey Fellow for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), where she covered health & COVID-19 for its digital news service, NABJ Black News & Views.

She was selected to submit a 2023 prediction for the Harvard University Nieman Lab, which every year taps the smartest in journalism and media to offer their thoughts on the future of digital media. Amethyst is a 2015 graduate of Thornton Township High School in Harvey and received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from New York University in 2019. As a young journalist, Amethyst has proven that is possible to bring change to underserved communities by gathering and sharing resources and information to create an impact.
