What did you learn from your experience as a Field Fellow? I came in with several years of experience in the nonprofit sector.
Working in philanthropy gave me a different perspective and understanding of the challenges of the field and the different ways of approaching decision-making. I was also fortunate enough to be a fellow during a time of change for the foundation. A lot can be learned in moments of change, and I got a behind-the-scenes view.
Is there a fond memory you recall from your fellowship? Attending the Hispanics in Philanthropy conference with Field Foundation staff and some of Field’s grantees was an impactful moment because I was surrounded by people philanthropy with similar or shared identities and experiences. Some of the most genuine and insightful takeaways from the conference were from my conversations with the Field grantees.
What is your advice for future Field Fellows? As a fellow, you have access to folks who have been in the philanthropic field for a long time and an abundance of resources. Don’t hesitate to ask for what you need and what would be helpful for you as a learner. The Field Fellowship is an investment in you and in your potential. Take advantage of the rooms and conversations you will be part of. Regardless of what your background is, your experience and expertise are invaluable to those spaces. The Foundation equally benefits from your insights and your ability to bring new perspectives. Be curious, ask questions, and provide feedback.
