Healing Illinois is a statewide initiative of the Illinois Department of Human Services, managed in partnership with the Field Foundation. Now in its fifth year, the program has invested more than $4.3 million annually in nonprofit organizations across Illinois doing the work of racial and community healing, connection, and civic renewal.
Through the 2026-2027 grant cycle, we will again distribute more than $4.3 million in grants. Funded projects will bring people together to build trusted relationships and strengthen community bonds—demonstrating that healing is not separate from civic life. It is foundational to it. When residents find common ground by sharing stories and listening to one another, communities grow stronger, and
our democracy becomes healthier. At the heart of Healing Illinois is the belief that every resident can contribute to healing by appreciating the inherent value of all people, respecting one another’s experiences, and honoring the histories of Illinois’ diverse communities.
